Van Buren Street Phoenix Arizona

9 years ago I quit my job, sold my house, and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Was that a crazy thing to do? Yessiree! I moved from a tiny little town in one of those "cold" states. The town had only nine streets. I use to walk with my cat (unleashed) to the post office to pick up the mail kind of town. The town had one gas station, one bank, one restaurant, one elementary school and one stop light. Well....
I reserved an apartment online sight unseen. I had a huge yard sale and sold most all my things. I gave away what didn't fit in the UHaul. With my Jeep attached on the back and two cats in the cab of the UHaul .... away we went. Arizona here we come!
I didn't know much about Phoenix except for it was the capitol of Arizona. It was a long trip!
I arrived at the apartment I had rented in advance online - it was on Van Buren Street. I found a job. When I was asked "Where do you live?" - I said "Oh, over on Van Buren Street."
After I had answered, everyone gasped, their eyes got big, and they all laughed ( hard, loud hold your stomach type laughing).
"You live on Van Buren Street?" Yessiree! What I didn't know was.... that's "THE" street where the hookers walk and do their business.
I moved before my lease was up.
I collect postcards - lots of postcards! ( I'm guessing 50,000 or more) Yesterday I ran across a stack of postcards at a yard sale. In there was a motel postcard on Van Buren Street. Above are my Van Buren Street postcards so far. Memories!

You Are Here in Phoenix

In the middle of the sidewalks in downtown Phoenix, Arizona are these "You Are Here." I thought it would be fun to show you something unique from Phoenix. Most people don't notice these. So you may be downtown and lost BUT you will know which direction you are heading :)Posted by Picasa

University of Minnesota at the Insight Bowl

New Years Eve starting at 5pm - Tempe Town Lake is the place to be! It is unbelievable how many people are there each year.... 200,000 and more show up for the "partying" with featured bands - this year is Styx. There are other bands, food and drinks, games, fireworks AND the Insight Bowl. The game starts at 6pm. This year University of Kansas Jayhawks vs. University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Whoa .... wait a minute.... Minnesota Golden Gophers??? I had to look that up to see where and who they were. Minneapolis with campuses throughout Minnesota ...yep! I have no ties to Kansas or Minnesota so I flipped a coin on this one - Minnesota won. Go Golden Gophers! Go University of Minnesota!

Back to the Fiesta Bowl party - Tempe residents only pay $5 for each ticket but those not living in Tempe pay $20 each ticket. It is a blast! Word of warning though - parking is a pain. The party last until 1 am and there is no bus system at that hour. Dress warm - party safe - go gophers!http://www.fiestabowl.org/index.php/insight

Light Rail Opening Day in Phoenix

Yesterday was the grand opening of the Light Rail. It travels 20 miles from Sycamore/Main in Mesa to North Phoenix on Montebello/19th Ave and 20 miles back. We decided to drive up to McClintock/Apache park and ride and try it out. The light rail system is offering FREE rides until January 1st. They were expecting 200,000 people to try it out during the duration of the FREE trail. We went yesterday, Saturday. I'm pretty sure all those 200,000 people showed up on the first day!
It took 30 minutes to get from McClintock/Apache to downtown Phoenix at the Washington/Central stop. The ride was smooth except for being so extremely crowded. We got off at that stop to have lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe.
I collect the Hard Rock pins, bears, shirts, and the Barbies. I bought the Phoenix Hard Rock Herrington bear dressed as a coyote. (like I needed that :)
Then..... we tried to go home. Everyone that had rode the light rail into Phoenix was trying to go home too. The line for the light rail was so long we decided to try the bus...... oh my! We walked over to catch the bus - the line was as long as the light rail line. To make a long story short.................
A little over two hours later, we made it home. I think riding the light rail would be fun and convenient BUT not during any events.

Go Texas! Go Longhorns!

For those of you coming down to the Fiesta Bowl... you might want to bring a coat! It's Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Texas Longhorns. I know the Ohio people have coats and will think our 70 degrees is summer time to them but.... you might want to bring the coat to cover the bruises after Texas Longhorns give them a butt whooping! Go Texas ! Go Longhorns! http://www.fiestabowl.org/

Fairytale Brownie Phoenix

Last Friday I was thinking I'd sent the out-of-state-families some flower arrangements. I was on the computer early this morning and remembered one day driving by Fairytale Brownie in Phoenix. I checked out their website - http://www.brownie.com/ I'm thinking I'll go over there instead! There is no one in my family that doesn't have a sweet tooth!
***Update: They had Free shipping available so I placed 5 orders. Very courteous and helpful staff member named Hannah took my orders. I was very pleased with the selections they had (especially since some of my family are not coffee drinkers). Although it was very busy they had plenty of staff to take care of us last minute shoppers.
I give Fairytale Brownie in Phoenix 2 thumbs up!!

*~*~* Snow in Tempe Arizona *~*~*

I know, I know.... you all get snow all the time but... Wouldn't it be cool to know exactly what days and time and where? Tempe MarketPlace is having their first snow on November 26. They are having a tree lighting ceremony at 6:30 pm, November 26. Then at 7:00 pm, it will "magically" snow. Woohoo!
And you all thought we had to drive to Flagstaff to see that wet, cold stuff. I'm bringing the grandkids and a camera!
*~*~*~* It's starting to look a lot like Christmas *~*~*~*

PIR

Posted by PicasaIt's November! Phoenix International Raceway opens November 9th. This is an old picture I took when we went a couple years ago. We got to go free two years in a row when my husband worked for a car dealership here in Phoenix. They gave us four fantastic tickets. We had a great time. They have all kind of things to do outside the stands before you go in. We wore our Nascar jackets even though the weather was in the 90's. We were glad we did because of all things it actually rained while we were there. *** One word of advice - make sure you bring some kind of ear plugs AND it is an all day event, plan accordingly. Have a Great Time!

LiveCam Mill Avenue Tempe AZ

Check this out... It is a live cam on Mill Avenue in Downtown Tempe. You need to hit the refresh button to see different angles of the camera. Mill Avenue is the hotspot for all the students at ASU. It is a tourist hotspot too. You should see it when it's Fiesta Bowl time.... or New Year's Eve. Look close you might even see me strolling by the camera. www.tempe.gov/millcam/

Chihuly The Nature of Glass Tempe AZ

Posted by PicasaAbout 6 years ago I saw the Dale Chihuly exhibit in downtown Phoenix. It was beyond words - exciting, fabulous, outstanding, stunning....
Then I saw the exhibit at the Beligio in Las Vegas during Christmastime. Above are some of the pictures I took at the Beligio.
November 22, 2008 through May 31, 2009 the exhibit will be at the Desert Botanical Gardens at Papago Park in Tempe Arizona.
If you are in this area -
this is a must to see!

Things to do Tempe/Scottsdale

Casino Arizona is really close to The Scottsdale Six drive-in. They have good buffets there. They have entertainers. Close by fun place to go if you have some money to lose... http://casinoarizona.com/

If you haven't been to a ProBass Shop, go! Each ProBass is unique to the area it is in. Anyone from out of town, I take here. I don't want to spoil it and tell you what you'll find inside. I will tell you that their homemade fudge is fantastic! http://www.basspro.com/

We have a six screen drive-in here called The Scottsdale Six. It shows movies every night. Since our winters are not like any other states, we have movies all year long. We bring lawn chairs and put them in the back of the truck with a large cooler. They have double features. It is fun and cheap way to entertain grand kids.

My sister makes jewelry. So one time while she was down here visiting, we went in Beads Galore. It doesn't look like much on the outside but... inside is amazing! They make you put your purse in a locker at the front door so I wasn't able to take any pictures of the inside. They do have a web page. If you ever want to kill an hour or two, just browse this store. http://beadsgalore.com/

Just North a few blocks of Beads Galore is Cookies From Home. This store is tucked along side a bunch of diverse businesses and would be hard to find unless you already knew it was there. It is well worth the find!

They have a web page that shows all their "goodies." I have bought and shipped from this store many times. Gifts from this store are always a delight. Their customer service is A Plus!http://cookiesfromhome.com/

We also have an IN-N-OUT. You kind of see ASU stadium in the background. I love their burgers, fries and shakes. This is a popular college hang out. It is on the North side of Tempe Town Lake. It is right next to a new 5 star hotel... and some condos selling for 1 million dollars. http://in-n-out.com/

Fresh & Easy Market

One of these new grocery stores opened up two miles from me. I went in it last week. It is a small market with " go green" items. I browsed around and found their prices comparative to the large super markets. Although their selections are limited, they do have some unique items. I was impressed by the produce and how you could buy the items individually. (like one banana or one carrot) They also have a small loaf of bakery baked bread for only 99 cent(regular price). Fantastic! This market is perfect for singles or couples. It is not a family type buy in bulk store.
Since I'm only buying for two, I'm putting this store on my list.
I checked online to see where these stores are located - so far, California, Nevada and Arizona. They need to put one in Colorado. My daughter would love this store!
If my opinion counts for anything (?) I give this market a two thumbs up.

100th post

This is my 100th post. I put a "tracker" on my blog to see if anyone was reading what I was writing. To my surprise - Yes! It doesn't tell me who, just city and state, or country. To my amazement - Germany, Finland, Sweden, Colombia, Switzerland, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, England, Belgium, Canada, and Tasmania (WOW) and Slovakia (WOW) have visited my page so far. In the US every state including Washington DC has visited except for Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Thank You for visiting my blog - you are always welcome to leave a comment :)

Peaceful side of Phoenix

Yes, believe it or not this is in Phoenix. It's on the "streets" side not the "avenues." Old homes with big green yards, huge trees, front porches, ahhhhhh so peaceful! While driving around looking for yard sales/ estates sales, I ran across this neighborhood. It is nowhere near me :( I took pictures (of course).
This is how yesterday went. My birthday was peaceful. My husband surprised me by taking the day off yesterday. He told me we could do whatever I wanted. :) Happy Birthday to me!

Meryvn's Mesa Arizona

Tomorrow is my "day in court." My hands are shaking so much I couldn't get a clear picture of the birthday gift cards from Mervyn's and Bailey, Banks and Biddle. My husband asked what I was doing today. I'm going shopping. I need something to wear to court. He asked me if I was going to the Mervyn's in Mesa (with a chuckle).

I don't have a Mervyn's near me so I drove to Chandler to shop there. They had this huge sale recently. My husband needed some work shoes so I said I would pick some up while they are on sale. They had the shoes but not his size. So they called around and found a pair in Mesa they would hold for me :( So I drove to "that area" of Mesa. I was scared to get out of my truck on a Saturday early afternoon in "that area." But I did..... Opened up the door to go inside and HOLY GUACAMOLY!

It looked like the Goodwill on a Saturday 50% off sale day. Every illegal with five kids or more were there. Kids screaming, running down the isles and stuff thrown on the floor throughout the whole store.

I hurried bought his shoes - hurried to my truck - and escaped from Mervyn's in Mesa. So when he smirked and asked me if I was going to the Mervyn's in Mesa today..... I said: @#%& NO!

Billboard www.postmormon.org

On the news recently, they talked about this new billboard that went up on the corner of Gilbert and Chandler. There have been articles in the newpaper and you'll find write ups about it online. So I drove to Gilbert to check what was going on. I took this picture and several others. It says: You are not alone! http://www.postmormon.org/
It has a picture of a couple and eight children.
If you have read my blog page, you'll find I have an opinion for everything. - not this time - I just want to add one fact that I read online. I read that not too far from this billboard are plans to build another Mormon Temple. There is one in Mesa, Arizona which is probably 20 miles from this site. I'll let you form your own opinion on this one. I just wanted to see it for myself. Here's what I saw.
